Wits-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab Masters/ Ph.D. Scholarships Programme 2022

The Wits-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab Programme is the result of a collaboration between the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and the Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) (TUB).

This cooperation aims to help the continent of Sub-Saharan Africa achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of 2015 and the New Urban Agenda (NUA) of 2016.

The New Urban Agenda (NUA), in particular, advocates for “Urban Paradigm Shift” which includes integrated approaches to urban planning and administration. It acknowledges the need for institutional capacity building as a key “enabling condition.”

The Wits-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab contributes through a ‘Postgraduate SDG School,’ which is an enhancement of postgraduate training offered in Wits’ School of Architecture and Planning (a leading university on the continent), in collaboration with TUB’s Habitat Unit and UNILAG’s Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development.

The Wits-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab initiative is financed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) from 2016 to 2020. The program’s duration has been extended from 2021 to 2025.
