TWAS established an Associateship Scheme in 1994, in collaboration with UNESCO, to assist combat the brain drain that plagues many poor nations.

The initiative encourages scholars from developing nations to visit centers of excellence in the South on a regular basis.

In the South, about 300 centers of excellence have committed to participate in the initiative.

An associate is hired for three years, during which time he or she is allowed to visit a Center twice for research cooperation.

Cost

  • The Associateship includes travel costs as well as a monthly donation of USD300 for incidental local expenditures.
  • The host center pays the costs of lodging and meals, as well as providing research facilities.

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. or an equivalent degree to be considered. Associate assignments are made on the basis of merit and are very competitive.
