TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowship for PhD Physical Sciences in India 2022

TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowship: TWAS and Kolkata, India’s S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences are awarding fellowships to talented international scientists from developing nations who want to pursue research for a PhD in physical sciences.

Programme details

TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowships are available for studies leading to a PhD degree in the physical sciences at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India, for four years with the potential of a one-year extension.

The following research initiatives are carried undertaken by the Centre:

  • Linear and Non-linear spectroscopy, Ultrafast molecular processes and spectroscopy, Ultrafast dynamics in biological macromolecules and magnetization, Ultrafast laser-induced processes, Soft condensed matter systems of chemical and biological interests, mesoscopic physics, ionic liquids, multi-component liquid mixtures, supercooled melts, supercritical fluids, bio-nano interface, nano-magnetism, magnonic crystals, micromagnetic simulations, Nanomaterials in general, and Physics of Correlated oxides, low dimensional systems, magnetic shape memory alloys, dilute magnetic semiconductors, multi-ferroic materials, thin films of metals and oxides, electronic, magnetic and structural properties of complex materials, superconductivity, strongly correlated electronic systems, quantum many-body physics, micromagnetic and monte carlo simulation of static and dynamic properties of nanomagnets, theoretical study of thermal conductivity, Ab initio plane-wave pseudo-potential calculation, strongly correlated electron systems, electronic structure and transport through nano-materials.
  • Quantum field theory, mathematical physics, cognitive science, granular physics, non-commutative quantum mechanics, statistical physics, non-linear dynamics, turbulences, lattice gauge theories, representation theory of lie groups and coherent states, quantum optics, black holes, constrained dynamics, quantum gravity, quantum spin systems, collective behaviour and emergent phenomena, explosive percolation, complex networks and critical phenomena.
  • Cosmology, Relativistic Astrophysics, ionospheric science, Astrochemistry.

Worth of Scholarship

  • A monthly stipend will be provided by S.N. Bose to cover living expenses and food.
  • The stipend will not be converted into foreign cash on a monthly basis.
  • On-campus housing will be given for free.
  • Comprehensive health insurance is not included in the monthly stipend.
  • However, a minimal contribution to a Contributory Medical Scheme is deducted by the Centre. The benefits are limited to a partial payment of doctor’s fees, medications, and/or hospitalization expenditures spent in Kolkata.
  • The payment scheme is modelled after the Government of India’s Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS).

TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowship | Eligibility Criteria

The following conditions must be met by candidates for these fellowships:

  • be at least 35 years old on December 31st of the year in which the application is being made;
  • be citizens of a developing country (as opposed to India);
  • must not be in possession of any temporary or permanent resident visa in India or any other developed nation;
  • be a professor or researcher in a university or research institute;
  • a Master’s degree in physics, mathematics, or physical chemistry is required;
  • be accepted by one of the S.N. Bose National Centre’s departments Preliminary acceptance requests should be sent to the Dean (Academic Programme), S.N. Bose National Center for Sciences, Kolkata, by email at [email protected] or fax at (+91) 33 2335 3477. (example) The acceptance letter is included with the application form, which may be obtained by clicking the link at the bottom of this page  under “related content”);

How to Apply

  • When submitting, or by the deadline, applicants must produce an Acceptance Letter from a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre. The application will not be considered for selection until it has received preliminary approval.
  • The online portal is the only way to apply for the TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowship Program. A tutorial on how to use the online application form may be downloaded from the link below.
  • Please note that candidates are limited to applying for one TWAS and OWSD program per calendar year. In that year, applicants will be ineligible to visit another university through the TWAS Visiting Professor programs. One exception: an institution’s president who invites an external researcher to offer his or her knowledge through the TWAS Visiting Professor programs may still apply for another program.

Application submissions must be received by June 30, 2022.
