The Thomson Reuters Foundation is searching for African journalists who wish to learn more about how their governments are losing money due to illegal activities.

The Wealth of Nations initiative is a long-term commitment, and participating journalists must sign an agreement stating that they will take into consideration all aspects of the program. These are some of the elements:

  • From November 29 to December 16, 2021, participants will take part in an intensive online training session focused on the investigation of illegal cash flows.
  • Reporting on nefarious financial transactions.
  • After the online course, there will be a mentorship program that will help with the preparation of these reports (exact dates to be confirmed).

Journalists must take into consideration all of the aspects as a condition of participation in the program and receiving a diploma at the conclusion of the course, which includes producing at least one report on illicit cash flows for program participants.

Benefits of Thomson Reuters Foundation

  • If you are chosen, you will be required to complete an intense online training course on illegal money flows, company reporting, accounting, and budgeting, as well as investigative procedures.
  • As part of the program, you will come up with one or more narrative concepts that you wish to develop. They’ll send you experienced journalists to assist you with your reporting until they’re published or aired.
  • Through our network of illegal finance professionals, you will have unique access to knowledge.
  • You’ll also have access to story ideas and editing help, as well as the opportunity to share your own knowledge with participants from different parts of the world.

Funding

  • They provide minor subsidies to help with Internet and data expenses. The data grant and a certificate of participation in the program will be given to participants who have attended at least 90% of the training.
  • If you are chosen for the mentorship program, you will be given a maximum stipend of $700 for reporting. Please keep in mind that funding is provided based on the estimated resources needed to finish the narrative. Cost estimates that do not provide a thorough explanation will be rejected.

Thomson Reuters Foundation Requirements

  • Journalists with at least two years of experience and fluency in French are eligible to apply.
  • It would be ideal if you have experience with investigative journalism, fundraising reporting, and/or mathematics in general. If you do not fit this condition but are strongly eager to study and grasp these problems, they will evaluate your application. Journalists who are just starting out in their careers are encouraged to apply.
  • You must be willing to commit a significant amount of time to report illegal cash flows.
  • Freelancers and staff journalists are also eligible to apply. Journalists working for a news organization must first have their editor-in-approval. chief’s Freelancers must provide confirmation that their work will be accepted by at least one media outlet.
  • Journalists from all forms of media are encouraged to apply (print, online, radio, or television).
  • Journalists must be African-based and work for at least one African news organization.
  • They must be able to communicate in English.

Application of Thomson Reuters Foundation

Applicants must submit

  • Two samples of previously completed works. Journalists from television and radio may submit their scripts as well as a synopsis.
  • Provide the French translation if samples of previously created works are in a foreign language (if these examples are available online, provide a web link for the web page to be translated).
  • A note from your editor consenting to your participation and confirming that any reporting generated as part of the program would be published.
