The Outcome of the FG-ASUU Meeting held on 11th April

On Monday, April 11 in Abuja, the Federal Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, met with members of the 2009 FG and university-based unions’ renegotiation committee to discuss the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) continuing strike.

During the discussion, the minister emphasized that the federal government supports the renegotiation of the university employees’ welfare package, but that ASUU’s obsession with strikes anytime there is a dispute with the government is unsatisfactory.

He appealed to the renegotiation committee to complete its work within the six-week deadline stipulated in the Memorandum of Action with the unions.

The Minister, who advised ASUU’s leadership to find a better way of pressuring the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission on implementing agreements reached, also advised the union to keep bombarding Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education, until a positive change occurs.
