The Texas Agricultural Finance Authority (TAFA) Young Farmer Grant program for 2022 is now accepting applications.

TAFA Young Farmer Grant Program

The goal of this program is to give financial help in the form of dollar-for-dollar matching grant funding to young agricultural producers who are starting or developing a company in Texas.

TAFA’s Young Farmer Grant Program aims to:

  • Develop and support Agriculture in Texas
  • Assist in meeting a financial demand that might otherwise go unmet.
  • Assist in the expansion of a business that has a positive influence on the community.
  • Hobby farming will not be supported using TAFA money. A hobby farm is a small-scale farm that is run largely for enjoyment rather than for profit.

Grant

Grants range from $5,000 to $20,000 

Capital purchases (personal property or other capital goods with a unit cost of more than $5,000) are not permitted with grant monies.

TAFA Young Farmer Grant Program | Eligibility Criteria

  • Anyone who is active or will be engaged in developing or growing agriculture in Texas, who is 18 years of age or older but less than 46 years of age as of the application deadline, shall be considered for a grant.
  • Applications that just seek to keep a current agricultural firm afloat are not eligible for this program’s funding.
  • This program does not provide prizes to corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, or other forms of foreign or domestic organizations. Any application made on behalf of a corporation, limited liability company, partnership, or other forms of foreign or domestic business shall be immediately disqualified by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA).
  • To maintain, build, or grow the proposed project, the applicant must be able to provide dollar-for-dollar matching expenditures.
  • Applicants must be citizens of the United States and must live and work in Texas.
  • Multiple family members asking for financing for the same project will not be considered for a grant.
  • To be eligible for a grant, the applicant must have a considerable stake in the agricultural company or activity that the project would affect, as specified in the application.
  • Each individual grant application must clearly explain a unique initiative and illustrate how the money will benefit the applicant individually.
  • An applicant who has a familial, work, or business link with a TDA executive, officer, or employee, or a member of the TAFA Board of Directors, will not be considered for a grant and will not be able to participate in the YFG program. According to Chapter 573 of the Texas Government Code, a familial connection is one that is within the third degree of consanguinity or second degree of affinity.

How to Apply for the TAFA Young Farmer Grant Program

For consideration, applicants must submit one (1) full, e-signed grant application packet. By 11:59 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, the whole online application package, including the application, must be RECEIVED.

After the deadline, applications may not be supplemented. It is the applicant’s obligation to guarantee that all essential materials are delivered on time.
