T-Mobile Foundation/Ashoka Changemaker Challenge 2022 for Young Innovators

The T-Mobile Foundation/Ashoka Changemaker Challenge 2022 is officially accepting applications.

The Changemaker Challenge is a national competition that encourages young people to take their ideas for a more inclusive, egalitarian, and sustainable future to the next level.

Young people must acquire the abilities required to be inventive, problem-solving changemakers in order to survive in a world where change is the only constant.

T-Mobile, the T-Mobile Foundation, and Ashoka are dedicated to helping young people unleash their big ideas to generate significant change via the Changemaker Challenge.

Focus Areas

They’re searching for bold ideas in the following categories this year:

Digital Empowerment – Solutions that help close the digital gap by providing everyone with access to the digital age and the skills they need to succeed. You may submit any number of ideas, including but not limited to:

  • Construct a mobile STEM education center that can go to various schools and provide STEM instruction to children of all backgrounds.
  • Create a platform that enables individuals to improve their digital literacy.
  • Start a program that encourages young people to form their own mini-digital exchange groups and work together to address important global challenges.
  • Create Wi-Fi hotspots to allow students in schools with restricted internet connectivity to participate in virtual education.

Thriving Planet – Suggestions for improving our planet’s health. You may submit any number of ideas, including but not limited to:

  • Create a sustainable product that may be used instead of plastic bottles.
  • Create a project that uses upcycling and donations to reduce textile waste.
  • A gardening-based initiative may help to improve urban sustainability.
  • Create a product that assists consumers in calculating and reducing the environmental effect of their rubbish.

Equity in Action – Ideas and solutions that break down barriers and allow everyone to flourish in a more inclusive society. You may submit any number of ideas, including but not limited to:

  • Create a program that offers young Black males with resources for skill development and professional advancement.
  • Create a program that encourages youth-led crime prevention by employing educational, athletic, and recreational events to foster trust and understanding between young people and law enforcement.
  • Start a program in general education that promotes a more inclusive atmosphere for children with special needs.
  • Connecting young girls with female role models via storytelling and hands-on activities to boost their confidence.

Benefits

Fifteen winners will be chosen to receive up to $15,000 in seed financing for their initiatives, as well as all-expenses-paid travel to T-Mobile headquarters in Bellevue, Wash later this year to participate in the three-day Changemaker Lab.

T-Mobile Foundation/Ashoka Changemaker Challenge | Eligibility Criteria

  • Participants must be at least 13 years old at the time of application and under the age of 18 at the conclusion of the entry period.
  • They must be citizens of the United States or Puerto Rico.
  • Each winning team will send two eligible participants (plus one chaperone if any of the participants is under the age of 18) to the Changemaker Lab.
  • Only one application per person and idea will be accepted.
  • Previous Changemaker Challenge winners are not eligible. You may reapply if you applied last year and were not selected as one of the winning teams.
  • All applications must be written in the English language.
  • Only employees of T-MOBILE USA, INC. or T-Mobile Puerto Rico, LLC, as well as their parent businesses, affiliates and subsidiaries, joint ventures, and partnering advertising and marketing agencies, are eligible to participate in the unique challenge set up for people with official links to T-Mobile.
  • When filling out the application, pick “Yes” for the question “Are you employed by T-Mobile or connected to an employee of T-Mobile?” Parent/Guardian and Sibling ties with T-Mobile employees are also eligible.

Criteria for Evaluation

The following criteria will be used to assess entries:

Quality of a Changemaker: You are a Changemaker! You’ve taken steps to make a meaningful impact, and you’re empowering others to do the same.

Creativity: Whether you’re taking on a new task or looking at an old one from a different angle, you’re approaching it in a unique, imaginative manner that shakes things up and deviates from the conventional.

Commitment: You’re ready to put your heart and soul into your endeavor and make a lasting impression. You may have taken the initial steps or just recognized an issue and devised a strategy, but you are now ready to move beyond a one-time action and have a lasting impact.

Connection: You’re focused on making a difference in a place that’s near to your heart and where you’ve lived. You are willing to connect with people and collaborate to address an issue that you care about.

How to Apply for the T-Mobile Foundation/Ashoka Changemaker Challenge

The early entry deadline is March 10 at 8 p.m. PST. T-Mobile and Ashoka will choose one team per category for a $1,000 cash award from those who apply by March 10, 2022. All submissions received by the early entry deadline will also get suggestions on how to enhance their application.
