Richard C. Longworth Media Fellowship Program 2022-2023 for Journalists in Chicago (up to $10,000)

The Richard C Longworth Media Fellowship Program 2022-2023 is now accepting applications. The goal of this fellowship, which is a cooperation with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, is to encourage Chicago and Midwest journalists to report on foreign issues.

The fellowships are funded by a gift from The Clinton Family Fund in memory of Richard C. Longworth, a former Chicago Tribune foreign journalist who is now a Distinguished Fellow at the Chicago Council. For the next two years, two scholarships will be offered to journalists concentrating on global challenges that affect Chicago and Midwestern readers and viewers.

Benefits

Each year, two $10,000 scholarships are given out. In June, the winners will be revealed.

Requirements for the Richard C. Longworth Media Fellowship Program

  • The competition is open to print, broadcast, and internet journalists based in Chicago or the Midwest.
  • Staff and freelance journalists are both able to apply.
  • Field reporting should take place in foreign areas, and issues should be topical and relevant to Chicago and Midwest audiences.

Additional information

Proposed projects must have a realistic strategy for wide distribution of the final product in Chicago or other Midwestern news media (print, online, and/or broadcast).

Both workers and freelancers should be able to show editors and/or producers that they are invested in their work. For freelancers, an applicant’s track record working with the mentioned sources is usually the most telling indicator of a distribution plan’s legitimacy.

Editors should not merely write letters declaring that they will evaluate the material. Letters from editors and/or producers who have previously worked with you and are interested in working with you again.
