For the 2022/23 academic year, Ghent University in Belgium is accepting applications for a PhD position on high-speed IC design for optical I/O.
The Ghent University-imec IDLab research group’s Design group is recruiting many fresh PhD and post-doctoral researchers. The Design group is a world leader in the development of high-speed and high-frequency integrated circuits for next-generation communications systems. Currently, the Design group is involved in nine European projects, one ESA project, and direct research contracts with global industry leaders. These partnerships provide the ideal atmosphere for high-level, industry-relevant research, with experienced peers and top-of-the-line test and measurement equipment. The primary research lines are wired (fiber optics, radio-over-fiber), wireless (5G, mmWave), and instrumentation, for which bespoke CMOS or SiGe BiCMOS devices are designed and incorporated into system demonstrations.
This vacancy seeks a strong research profile in analog and mixed-signal circuit design for the next-generation high-speed driver, receiver, and equalizer circuits with very low power consumption for high-density optical I/O to provide Terabit per second connectivity in GPU-based computing systems in order to strengthen our design team. One of the research group’s specializations is the comprehensive co-design of photonic and electrical chips to produce small, low-power, high-performance optical transceivers. Furthermore, optical switching is planned for the optical network to effectively distribute workloads across computer units, necessitating the use of specific burst-mode circuits to handle such data packets.

PhD position on high-speed IC design for optical I/O | Eligibility Criteria
- A suitable master’s degree, such as a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering, is required.
- Strong experience designing and manufacturing analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits utilizing sophisticated SiGe BiCMOS or CMOS technologies.
- Expertise in design software such as Cadence, Mentor Graphics, electromagnetic simulators, parasitic extraction, and verification software.
- Additional experience is seen favorably:
- Experience in the workplace (academic or industrial) or writings
- Characterization of high-speed, high-frequency components and (sub-)systems in the laboratory
- Signal processing, optical devices, and photonics circuits are all covered in this course.
- Both speaking and writing, your English is excellent.
- You’re a team member who excels at networking and reporting.
