OAU New Vice-Chancellor – The Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed Adebayo Simeon Bamire, a Professor of Agricultural Economics, as the university’s new substantive Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Bamire’s appointment will take effect from June 7, 2022, according to OAU Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Council, Owelle Oscar Udoji, who announced it during a press conference in Ile-Ife on Thursday.

Mr. Bamire was said to have come in first, ahead of Razaq Kalilu, a professor of art and former deputy vice-chancellor at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, and Kayode Ijadunola, a professor of public health and community medicine and former provost of the OAU’s college of health sciences, who came in second and third.

Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, had his term terminated on June 6, 2022.

Who is Professor Bamire?

Mr. Bamire was born on January 18, 1959, in Oyan, Osun State’s Odo-Otin Local Government Area.

He was said to have had his primary school education at St. Clares’ Nursery and Primary School in Osogbo and his secondary school education at St. Charles’ Grammar School in Osogbo.

He received his Bachelor of Agriculture in 1985, M.Phil. in 1992, and Ph.D. in 1999 while studying Agricultural Economics at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife).

In 2001, Mr. Bamire’s Ph.D. thesis was awarded the “National Universities Postgraduate Thesis Award.”

Mr. Bamire allegedly won the deanship election of the college of agriculture by a single vote during the term of the university’s 10th vice-chancellor, Bamitale Omole.

Mr. Bamire allegedly had a tense relationship with the then-vice-chancellor, Mr. Omole, who was finally escorted from the campus by protesting workers one month before the end of his term in 2016 amid claims of corruption and tainted selection procedures for his replacement.

Following the crisis, which resulted in the disintegration of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on campus, an acting vice-chancellor, Anthony Elujoba, was appointed.

Mr. Omole, a professor of history and international relations, has had it “difficult” on campus since the appointment of the departing vice-chancellor, Ogunbodede.

He allegedly voluntarily resigned at the age of 68 earlier this year, rather than waiting to reach the 70-year-retirement age allowed under Nigerian legislation controlling the university system.
