The National Geographic Society Grant Program 2022 is accepting applications.

The National Geographic Society provides a variety of funding options with several entry points to enable a dynamic road to join their community and connect with them – whether as a budding Explorer or a field luminary.

Individuals working on ambitious, creative, and transformational initiatives in science, conservation, storytelling, education, and technology that correspond with one or more of their emphasis areas are eligible to apply for funds.

Grant Categories for National Geographic Society Grant Program

Level I Funding

Begin a New Era of Exploration: If you haven’t received a grant from the National Geographic Society yet, are working to establish yourself in your field, want to gain more experience leading projects, and want to join the National Geographic Explorer community, you can apply for a one-year Level I grant.

Level II Financing

Increase Your Impact: You may apply for a Level II grant if you have already earned a National Geographic Society grant or if you are more established in your profession and want a higher level of funding.

These funds are very competitive and are only awarded to a few initiatives that push the envelope in order to make a meaningful and demonstrable difference in your profession.

Projects may last for up to two years.

Benefits

  • Level I grants provide up to $20,000 in financing and provide unique possibilities for training, networking, coaching, mentoring, and more from National Geographic Explorers, experts, staff, partners, and forums.
  • Level II awards are very competitive, with grantees receiving up to $100,000 in financing. Grantees will give mentoring within the Explorer community, provide their experience, and participate in relevant speaking engagements upon request at this funding level.

National Geographic Society Grant Program Requirements

  • To apply for a National Geographic Society grant, you must be at least 18 years old.
  • To guarantee that any awarded funds arrive on schedule, project start dates should be at least six months following the application deadline.
  • If you’re working on a project outside of your native nation or community, you must have at least one local collaborator who is heavily interested in the project on your team.
  • You may only submit a proposal for one project at a time as the project leader.
  • Before applying to lead a new project, you must submit a final report and media from any past National Geographic Society grants for which you were the leader.
  • The project leader should draft the application and be named as the person responsible for carrying out the project.
