MIT SOLVE Indigenous Communities Fellowship

Native inventors are paving the way for a bright future led by and for their people. Since 2007, Native American women have created at least 17 new enterprises every day, increasing the number of Native-owned businesses in the United States. Native scientists are studying environmental degradation and proposing innovative community-based remedies at the same time. A new generation of proficient speakers is being fueled by a surge of language revival projects. Finally, a recent trend toward tribal ownership of healthcare attempts to improve access to treatment and heal people in a culturally integrated manner.

Despite centuries of exploitation and a system that has resulted in high unemployment rates, language and cultural loss, the problem of murdered and missing indigenous women, and environmental injustice caused by both local pollution and global climate consequences, there are still challenges. To address these modern concerns, Native tribes have Indigenous knowledge systems and innovative technology. Indigenous Communities offer the solutions to reducing the digital gap and providing new job possibilities, as well as leading the transition to renewable energy and educating a new generation of Native leaders.

Worth of Scholarship

  • Each chosen Fellow will receive a $10,000 award.
