Maya Angelou Book Award 2022 for Writers in the U.S. ($10,000 prize)
The Maya Angelou Book Award 2022 is now accepting applications. The Maya Book Award was established in 2020 to celebrate the legacy of author Maya Angelou, who was born in Missouri.
The prize honors contemporary writers whose work exemplifies a dedication to social justice in the United States or throughout the globe. In alternate years, the Maya Book Award honors works of poetry or fiction. The Award will be presented to a book of fiction in 2022. The prize for 2022 is not open to poetry entries.
Award
Each year, a writer will be awarded $10,000, go on a reading tour of Missouri colleges, universities, and libraries, and be honored in a ceremony hosted by the Kansas City Public Library, the University of Missouri, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Requirements for the Maya Angelou Book Award | Eligibility Criteria
- Publishers must submit entries. Authors are not permitted to submit their work on their own.
- Eligible works have a publication date in 2021 or projected publication date in November 2022.
- Entrants must be citizens of the United States and live in the country.
Participants must be at least 18 years old to enter. - Entrants must be available for a two-week reading tour at one of Missouri’s partner educational institutions. The tour itinerary will be confirmed by the prize recipient and the tour planner, and the tour may be performed digitally or in person, depending on the circumstances.
- Workers at a Missouri college or institution that co-sponsors this prize, as well as employees of the Kansas City Public Library, are not eligible to enter.
How to Apply for the Maya Angelou Book Award
Entries must be submitted by April 1, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. CDT. The committee will not consider an entry complete until it receives an electronic manuscript or five print copies.
