Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award 2022

The Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award 2022 has been announced by the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University’s Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award

They provide funding for promising early-career creative nonfiction writers to report on an untold story that reveals truths about the human condition.

The Award was established in 2015 by individuals and organizations affected by the life and work of Matthew Power, a widely-traveling and award-winning journalist who strived to live and share the experiences of the people and places he covered.

In March 2014, while on duty in Uganda, Power, a longtime friend of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, died.

Prize

The $12,500 cash prize will be allocated in the following manner:

  • $6,000 when the winning proposal is announced; $3,000 when considerable progress (typically a first draft) is shown; and $3,500 when the proposal is completed and accepted by the Award committee.

Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award Requirements

The Institute wants the Winner’s Work to be of the highest quality.

While anyone is welcome to apply for the Reporting Award, with the restrictions listed below, the Institute strongly welcomes submissions from early-career, creative nonfiction writers who are working on projects that fit the competition’s standards.

The Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award is not open to the following individuals:

  • New York University employees, volunteers, interns, and agents, as well as their parent firms, affiliates, and subsidiaries (“NYU Affiliates”).
  • Graduates of New York University who graduated within the last two years of the application deadline are eligible.
  • Journalists who work for well-established news organizations and are able to finance such initiatives on their own.
