Marguerite and Lamar Smith Fellowship for Writers 2022 (up to $5,000)

The Marguerite and Lamar Smith Fellowship for Writers 2022 are now accepting applications.

McCullers’ experience at the Breadloaf Writers Conference in Vermont, particularly the Yaddo Arts Colony in Saratoga Springs, New York, inspired the Marguerite and Lamar Smith Fellowship for Writers.

The Carson McCullers Center for Authors and Musicians gives fellowships to writers to study at her childhood home in Columbus, Georgia, to acknowledge the value of these writers’ residences to McCullers’ work. The fellowships are designed to provide authors in residence with undisturbed time to work on their projects, away from the distractions of daily living and other professional obligations.
