Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Program

Following approval by Africa CDC’s Governing Board in March 2018, the African Union Commission inaugurated the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) – Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Program in collaboration with the Kofi Annan Foundation.

The goal is to help ambitious African Public Health Leaders (Fellows) gain advanced skills and competencies in order to develop, manage, and lead public health projects that will alter Africa’s public health.

Senior public health experts from African Union member states who will contribute to and lead the implementation of a new public health order for Africa, as well as mentor and nurture the continent’s future generation of public health leaders, will be accepted into the program.

Fellowship Format

Over the course of a year, the Fellowship will use a hybrid learning technique that incorporates self-directed study to complete a Personal Development Plan (PDP).

Webinars, keynote lectures, online self-directed study with assessments, case studies, and an individual leadership challenge project will provide opportunities for experiential learning.

For all Fellows as a cohort, it will entail up to eight weeks of institutional residential assignments.

Fellows will complete the remainder of their training in their home country, maintaining their usual job duties.

while simultaneously completing required courses and putting the leadership challenge project into action

Fellows will be paired with knowledgeable mentors and coaches to help them continue their education.

Funding

Africa CDC will offer all learning and development materials, as well as cover all fellowship expenses, such as airfare, daily allowances, and insurance during residential assignments.

Fellows will be assisted in obtaining the necessary software for online study.

Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Program Requirements

Applicants for the Fellowship must:

  • Be citizens of a member state of the African Union;
  • Hold a postgraduate degree in a subject of public health that is applicable;
  • Have significant professional experience in public health, including but not limited to one health, medicine, finance, health economics, health policy, animal health, or environmental health;
  • Be employed full-time at a private or governmental institution in Africa in any field of public health;
  • Having a track record of successful public health leadership or the ability to show the potential for effective public health leadership where they can favorably affect population health outcomes

Application for Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Program

The online application form must be used to submit all applications.

Applications that are incomplete will not be evaluated.

The following information is requested of all applicants:

  • A letter of support from the applicant’s present employer confirming employment and ensuring that the candidate would be given sufficient time to engage in the Fellowship program and attend the whole eight-week institutional residential experience.
  • Two trustworthy professional references’ letters of recommendation
  • A personal statement (maximum 400 words) demonstrating the candidate’s dedication to African public health, including the following:
  • Their professional accomplishments and leadership experience
  • Their vision for successful public health leadership in Africa, as well as the influence it will have in the future
  • How they plan to support African public health projects
  • A proposal for a leadership challenge project (maximum 400 words) that explains a possible leadership challenge project that they will undertake. A title, a concise explanation of the problem (what, who is impacted, and why), a recommended solution method, and the predicted result should all be included in the proposal.
