For the 2022/23 academic session, the African Development Bank Group is accepting applications for the Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) Program for high-achieving African students.

The AfDB and Japan launched the Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) Program in 2017 with the goal of providing two-year scholarship awards to high-achieving African graduate students so that they can pursue post-graduate studies (i.e. a two-year Master’s degree program) in selected priority development areas on the continent and in Japan.

Under the AfDB’s High 5s agenda (i.e. “Feed Africa,” “Light up Africa,” “Industrialize Africa,” “Integrate Africa,” and “Improve the quality of life of the people of Africa”) and key Japanese development assistance initiatives, the overarching goal the AfDB and the Government of Japan seek to achieve is to enhance skills and human resource development in Africa. Energy, agriculture, health, environmental sustainability, and engineering are among the primary research topics of JADS.

Worth of Scholarship

The following are some of the advantages of the JADS Scholarship:

At the commencement of the study program and shortly following the completion of the scholarship period, you will fly in economy class between your home country and the host university.
Graduate school tuition and the expense of basic medical insurance, which are normally obtained via the institution.
A monthly stipend to cover basic living expenditures, such as books.

The JADS Scholarship does not cover the following expenses:

The cost of a VISA application
Expenses for bringing and/or supporting the scholar’s family;
Courses or training outside of the classroom;
The graduate program does not provide language instruction;
Expenditure on travel throughout the duration of the program of study;
Expenses for supplemental instructional materials, field excursions, and other such activities.
internships or participation in workshops/seminars; or
Educational equipment such as computers.

Japan Africa Dream Scholarship | Eligibility Criteria

In general, citizens of African nations must:

a citizen of one of the AfDB’s member countries;
in good health;
accepted unconditionally to begin a Master’s degree program at least one of the JADS partner universities in the ensuing academic year;
Have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in energy (or a related profession) that was earned at least one year previous to the application due date;
After receiving a Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree, have at least one year of recent development-related experience;

Extremely Important,

Scholarships are not available to applicants who live or work outside of their native countries.
Applicants who are already enrolled in graduate degree programs are not eligible for JADS funding.
Similarly, the applicant cannot be an Executive Director, his/her alternate, or staff of the African Development Bank Group in any capacity, or a close relative of the aforementioned by blood or adoption, with “close relative” defined as Mother, Father, Sister, Half-sister, Brother, Half-brother, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, Niece, or Nephew.
