The International Court of Justice Judicial Fellowship Program 2022-2023 is now accepting applications.

International Court of Justice Judicial Fellowship Program

The Judicial Fellowship Program was created to provide new law graduates the opportunity to get work experience at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Candidates are nominated by their institutions and funded by them.

By actively integrating participants in the Court’s work and enabling them to build on their experience under the supervision of a judge, the Fellowship Program strives to strengthen participants’ knowledge of public international law and the Court’s processes.

The Judicial Fellows are full-time employees who work under the supervision of a Member of the Court and alongside the judge’s primary legal assistant.

Judicial Fellows should anticipate attending public hearings before the Court, do research and produce memorandums on legal issues or factual elements of cases currently before the Court, and undertake other activities as assigned by their judge.

The Fellowship lasts for around 10 months, from early September to early June the following year.

Up to 15 participants from different colleges across the globe are accepted each year by the Court.

Funding

  • Universities in underdeveloped countries who want to apply for financial assistance for their nominations might do so via the trust fund.

International Court of Justice Judicial Fellowship Program Requirements

  • Candidates must be 31 years old or younger at the start of the program. In certain instances, this condition may be relaxed.
  • The Court looks for applicants of various nationalities while making its selection.
  • The Court’s official languages are English and French, and participants must be fluent in at least one of them in reading, writing, and speaking. It is advantageous to have a functional grasp of the second official language.

Application for International Court of Justice Judicial Fellowship Program 

The following materials will be required of candidates to submit to the Court through their universities:

  • The university sends a letter to the Court presenting the candidate(s). The introduction letter for colleges that financially support their candidates must additionally contain information about the university’s commitment to financially sponsor the applicant.
  • The candidate must fill out an application form and a summary table.
  • a minimum of two to three letters of recommendation;
  • Candidate’s official academic records;
  • One 15-page writing sample is required. A sample might come from a prior publication, note, or university paper, ideally on an international law issue.
