Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2023 (Funded)

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2023 are now accepting applications.

HFSP Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Human Frontier Science Program encourages scientific interactions across national and disciplinary borders by funding outstanding basic research that employs fresh and multidisciplinary approaches to understanding fundamental biological challenges.

HFSP provides three-year postdoctoral scholarships to bright postdocs who want to transform scientific paradigms by proposing a frontier-extending research project. The fellowships are held in a nation other than the one where the Ph.D. was awarded. Fellows are expected to bring new perspectives to the frontiers of the life sciences, so the Program encourages postdocs from fields other than biology to apply their skills to a fundamental biological problem.

Fellowship Details

There are two types of fellowships offered by HFSP:

  • Long-Term Fellowships are for applicants who have completed a PhD in biology and desire to work on a cutting-edge project in the life sciences.
  • Applicants with a PhD in a non-biological field (e.g., physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, or computer sciences) who have never worked in the life sciences are eligible for Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships.

Cost

A living allowance, as well as a research and travel allowance, is provided to fellows. Fellows may also be eligible for a child allowance, parental leave allowance, or relocation payment, depending on their circumstances.

HFSP Postdoctoral Fellowships | Eligibility Criteria

A candidate who is not a national of one of the HFSP members may apply to work exclusively at one of the member countries’ research institutions. An applicant who is a national of one of the member nations may apply to work in any country’s research institute.

HFSP member countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus (EU part only), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Republic of Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

By the commencement of the fellowship, a research doctorate (PhD) or a doctoral-level degree similar to a PhD with equivalent expertise in fundamental research (e.g., a research-based MD or medical PhD) must be given. It isn’t necessary at the time of submission. The term “conferred degree” refers to the fact that you have obtained your diploma for the degree. The “conferral date” is the date printed on the official PhD certificate.

By the Letter of Intent submission deadline, applicants must have at least one lead author publication, which can be a work I published in a recognized OA preprint repository, (ii) accepted for publication, (iii) in the press, or (iv) previously published by a peer-reviewed journal.

How to Apply for the HFSP Postdoctoral Fellowships

Applicants can now start a letter of intent using the proposal platform Proposal Central (deadline for initiation is 18 May 2022). The letter of intent submission date is May 19, 2022.
