The Africa Housing Forum Innovation Awards support affordable housing alternatives from a variety of industries in order to reduce the housing shortage. The awards are intended to highlight the value of strategic cooperation in fostering innovation, particularly via people-public-private partnerships. The emphasis of these awards will be on promoting and rewarding efforts that address actual needs and offer cheap, disaster-resilient, inclusive, and long-term solutions, with a COVID-19 pandemic consideration thrown in for good measure.

Categories

ShelterTech (sponsored by the Hilti Foundation) – This category encourages private-sector technology innovations, such as products and services, that provide practical solutions to affordable housing challenges and can be commercially scaled and replicated to reach more low-income households and communities.

Best Practices — Practices that are the result of public or public-private partnerships and lead to better communities and settlements, as well as expanded access to affordable housing for the poorest members of society.

Public Policies — Actions or programs at all levels of government that aid in the reduction of the housing deficit while taking into account the unique requirements of minorities, vulnerable, and marginalized groups.

Benefits

  • A cash reward of $5,000 will be awarded to three winners, one from each category.
  • On May 13, 2022, the top 12 finalists will be asked to present their solutions at the Africa Housing Forum.
  • Each winner will be asked to join the Habitat for Humanity delegation to the World Urban Forum in Katowice, Poland, in June 2022, with travel and lodging expenses covered.
  • The marketing and awareness efforts of Habitat for Humanity and its partners will benefit the finalists and winners.

Habitat for Humanity Africa Housing Forum Innovation Awards | Eligibility Criteria

Organizations that are working on projects in Africa are eligible to apply.

Category 1: Organizations, companies, startups to scaleups, researchers, entrepreneurs, and innovation institutions and agencies are encouraged to submit technological solutions (products or services) that address problems, challenges, or opportunities in the affordable housing market in an innovative way. Applied technology that lowers costs and facilitates access to sustainable and high-quality housing and habitat for vulnerable and excluded groups, allowing for more efficient and intelligent habitat design, planning, and management for the development of healthier, greener, more inclusive, and resilient dwellings and cities.
Category 2: This category is solely for the public sector, including its various levels of government (municipal, metropolitan, subnational, national, and so on), public partnerships (associations, networks of institutions, and so on), as well as public companies and public agencies at various levels and sectors.

Category 3: Social and territorial organizations, municipalities, national and subnational governments, foundations and corporations, consulting firms and private companies, academia, research centers, multilateral organizations, civil society representatives, and any other interested organizations are eligible for this category.
