The Gender-Responsive Agriculture Systems Policy (GRASP) Fellowship 2022 is now accepting applications.

The GRASP Fellowship is a career development program for African women in policy who are in their mid-career and want to help create and execute gender-responsive agricultural policies in Africa.

The GRASP Fellowship, an initiative of African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) and financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), promotes policy reform for women’s empowerment across institutions and national governance systems. AWARD’s GRASP Fellowship aims to develop a pool of confident and talented African women who can drive policy reforms to enhance the lives of African smallholders.

To empower recipients to lead policy-making processes for agricultural transformation in Africa, the GRASP Fellowship will provide focused leadership and mentorship training, catalytic money, and access to networks. Each cohort of the non-residential Fellowship participates in virtual and in-person events over the course of two years.

Fellowship Structure and Implementation

Immersive Training Courses: Selected AWARD Policy Fellows will be supported by the GRASP Fellowship for a two-year non-residential program that will include rigorous tailored virtual and face-to-face mentorship and training sessions. The workshop will focus on how policy professionals may improve their negotiation skills, improve their ability to create gender-responsive policies, and form collaborative connections with various stakeholders in order to achieve desired policy objectives.

Three-tier mentoring program: The GRASP Fellowship will include a three-tiered mentoring process in which mentors and mentees create mutually beneficial and supportive connections centered on their professional and personal capabilities at various points in their careers. Each Fellow will be paired with a senior policy professional as a mentor and a younger policy professional as a mentee. To increase knowledge exchange and experience, the mentoring trio will be encouraged to engage in formal mentoring activities.

Policy Innovation Projects: Policy Fellows, Mentors, and Mentees will be assisted in forming coalitions to work on Policy Innovation Projects (PIPs). The PIPs are GRASP’s flagship initiatives, and they will provide participants with hands-on experience working together to design gender-responsive agricultural policy. Each AWARD Policy Fellow will receive modest catalytic money to create and implement gender-responsive PIPs in order to enhance an inclusive policy-making approach in the African agricultural setting.

GRASP Fellowship | Eligibility Criteria

Participants from Malawi, Nigeria, and Zambia are welcome.
Applicants must have a master’s degree and 10 years of experience working on policy problems related to women, agriculture, and food systems at the national, regional, or continental levels.
Applicants must be connected to the government, non-government, commercial sector, development, civil society, regional and sub-regional communities, or academia.
