EatSafe Innovation Challenge 2022 for Innovators in Nigeria & Ethiopia ($10,000 prize)

The EatSafe Innovation Challenge 2022 is now accepting applications.

EatSafe Innovation Challenge

The EatSafe Innovation Challenge invites innovators to propose their ideas on how current food safety solutions might be modified and deployed in Nigerian and Ethiopian traditional markets.

Applicants will have the opportunity to compete in the Global EatSafe Innovation Challenge, which will be held in Denmark and will award USD 10,000 to the winning proposal! The challenge will run from April to October 2022 and will be staged as a worldwide project with national pitching events in Nigeria and Ethiopia, as well as a global final event in Denmark.

Categories

Peer learning platforms: As relevant to the local context, innovations in this area should offer a conduit for consumers to receive/share food safety knowledge or give feedback (to companies and peers).

Processing: They’re seeking food safety-improving processing improvements in this area.

Food waste technology: They’re searching for food waste technologies that help to improve food safety or identify food safety problems in upcycled food for conventional markets in this area.

Sensors for food safety assessment: They’re seeking sensor improvements that can identify hazard(s) in LMICs, such as chemicals or microbials, or alternatively, contamination symptoms (turgor, color, density, etc.).

Retailing and packaging: They’re searching for ideas that improve food safety in the sale or packaging of healthy foods in this area.

Urban-rural links and food logistics: They’re searching for ideas that make it easier to communicate between urban demand and rural supply in this area.

Platforms for supply chain management: They’re looking for innovations that improve food production/processing operational efficiency and provide clear value to businesses, including food safety operations (e.g. built-in cleaning schedules; reminders of processing parameters such as temperature, time, the concentration of cleaning agent; easy protocols to troubleshoot issues).

Benefits

  • Participants will get national and international recognition, mentoring, technical training, and networking opportunities with top industry leaders, investors, researchers, and academics.
  • In an online event, four winners from the National EatSafe Innovation Challenges will be revealed and promoted. They will also get technical assistance from the IFSS portal team in a design workshop to enhance their concept, as well as mentorship from a local food safety expert to prepare the finalists to submit their proposal at the final Demo Day.
  • Following that, four champions from each national competition will be picked to compete in the Global EatSafe Innovation Challenge Finals, which will be held in Denmark in September 2022. Participants in the global finals have a chance to win USD 10,000. The EatSafe Challenge’s distinctiveness lies in the journey the team takes the selected participant on from the application process to the final pitch.

EatSafe Innovation Challenge | Eligibility Criteria

  • Entrepreneurs, students, researchers, and other innovators from Nigeria and Ethiopia are eligible to apply.
  • You must be available to travel in October 2022 and follow all Danish travel regulations.
  • Each application will be assigned to one of the seven innovation categories and will be required to provide a compelling notion of how the innovation may be used in a local food market.

Selection Criteria

Food safety and nutritional benefit, practicality, adaptation in low-and middle-income nations, scalability and environmental sensitivity will be rated on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being the lowest score (bad) and 5 being the best score (excellent) against the 5 selection criteria.

  • Food safety and nutritional benefit: The amount to which an invention may be utilized to minimize infections and pollutants at key points in the supply chain, as well as enhance food safety for nutritious foods in upstream and downstream operations.
  • Adaptability to LMICs: How extensively an invention can be implemented and embraced, particularly in low-resource environments and conventional marketplaces. Give careful regard to the country’s resources for developing and implementing the invention.
  • Scalability: An innovation’s capacity to be expanded to a large population for a larger effect, with an emphasis on vulnerable people (i.e. empowering consumers, vendors, women, and young children). This feature acknowledges that the innovation’s scalability may be hampered by early expenses and hazards. The key users of a new product should be considered in business models, as well as their capacity to pay for it.
  • Environmental Sensitivity: The influence of an invention on climate and environmental resilience, as well as decreasing the food system’s greenhouse gas footprint. Applicants will not be graded on the uniqueness or maturity level/readiness of their innovation: concept, prototype, gaining momentum, scaling up, mainstream.
