Applications are open for the East Africa Emerging Public Interest Advocates Program 2022.
The program empowers young advocates through rigorous skills-based training and practical experience in public interest litigation.
The program’s purpose is to develop the next generation of East African public interest advocates who are committed to and passionate about advancing social justice and democratic ideals.
This is due to the fact that there are only a few active public interest plaintiffs since most attorneys pursue careers in private practice or other disciplines of law.
Program Details
Up to 30 excellent young advocates from Kenya, Tanzania (mainland), Tanzania (Zanzibar), and Uganda are selected for the fellowship.
Young attorneys from Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan who satisfy the program’s standards are eligible for a 10% special quota.
The program offers fellows with the chance to study from public interest litigation and advocacy academics and practitioners for six (6) months, both in class and in court, under the following carefully prepared curriculum:
- Residential training: A one-month intensive residential training program is available. Lectures, court visits, community participation, and practical learning via moot courts and simulated trials are all part of the program. Fellows engage with some of East Africa’s most prominent practitioners and academics in the fields of human rights, constitutionalism, and public interest litigation.
- Practicum: 4.5 months of hands-on experience at a partner organization under the supervision of an experienced mentor. Fellows work on specific issues under the guidance of an experienced public interest lawyer. During this phase, you will get hands-on instruction in public interest litigation and advocacy.
- Closing Seminars: Fellows, trainers, and mentors gather in residence to reflect on their experiences, assess their progress, and plan their next steps. At this point, the respective cohort’s program comes to an end, and fellows join the program’s alumni network.

East Africa Emerging Public Interest Requirements
Any lawyer, with up to 5 years of experience in both work and litigation and meets the following criteria is eligible to apply:
- Be a citizen of an East African Community member country and plan to stay in the area for the duration of the fellowship.
- Must be able to begin the program by February 7, 2022, and remain committed throughout all stages.
- Be a recent law school graduate with up to five years of relevant job experience by February 2022.
- Demonstrate a strong dedication to human rights, the rule of law, and social fairness.
- Be enthusiastic about collaborating with the community to achieve justice.
- Understand the human rights and constitutional background of each country, as well as the area as a whole.
- Prepare to work in groups and with a mentor to help you advance your career.
- All supporting documentation has been given in the proper format.
Application for East Africa Emerging Public Interest
The application form must be completed in English.
Any submissions that are not submitted via the online application method will be rejected by CSL.
You’ll have until the end of the application round to submit the completed form after you’ve started the online application.
Once the application window is closed, active but incomplete applications will not be considered.
Applications must include the following supporting documentation to be eligible for consideration:
- Uploading proof of citizenship to the online application system.
- Transcripts and certificates in their whole should be submitted to the online application system.
