Chappell and White PhD Scholarship at Australian National University 2022
For the academic year 2022/2023, the Australian National University is accepting applications for the Chappell and White PhD Scholarship.
The Research School of Earth Sciences may grant a PhD scholarship known as the Chappell and White PhD Scholarship (“the Award”) once every three years.
The goal of the award is to help high-achieving local and foreign PhD candidates who are working on petrology and ore petrology research.
Professor Bruce Chappell and Professor Allan White contributed funding for this award.
Professor Bruce Chappell worked at the Australian National University for more than 30 years, from 1960 to 1997. In 1967, he received an ANU PhD, and in 1990, he received an ANU DSC. Many international accolades, including the election to the Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Science, have recognized his long-term scientific efforts.
From 1960 until 1971, Professor Allan White was a member of ANU’s Geology Department. Professor Sir Douglas Mawson, a prominent Australian geologist, and Antarctic explorer, was his undergraduate professor. White left ANU to establish La Trobe University’s Department of Geology.
Worth of Scholarship
The scholarship includes the following benefits in addition to the weekly stipend:
- Allowances for travel and relocation for students traveling to Canberra to begin their research program;
- Thesis reimbursement;
- Dependant Child Allowance (for international students only); Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) (for international students only); and Paid Medical, Maternity, and Parental Leave (for international students only).
Requirements for the Chappell and White PhD Scholarship
Every three years, the Award will be given to a prospective or continuing student who is:
- a domestic and/or international student; and enrolled or enrolling full-time in a program of study for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Sciences and conducting research in the areas of petrology and ore petrology at the University; and holds a Bachelor degree with first-class honors, or a Master degree with a research component or equivalent from a recognized university; and holds a Bachelor degree with first-class honors, or a Master degree with a research component or equivalent from a

The Research School of Earth Sciences will issue a call for applications with a deadline determined by the school.
