The University of Edinburgh’s Centre of African Studies is now taking applications for the Catto Combined MSc and PhD Scholarships for the academic year 2022/2023.

This scholarship is aimed to provide a comprehensive package. The goal is to allow people who do not believe they have enough research experience to pursue a PhD to get that experience via an MSc.

The MSc year serves as a bridge between undergraduate and doctoral courses. It is believed that the combined bundle of assistance may persuade some people who may not have considered pursuing a PhD to reconsider. One of the scholarship’s main goals is to broaden the pool of African academics. Scholars who bring innovative and significant research to the field of African Studies.

Worth of Scholarship

During the one-year MSc, this scholarship will cover all expenses as well as a £15,840 yearly stipend. It will also cover the next three years of PhD studies, or the whole four-year PhD program.

Similarly, £4,000 will be granted in advance to assist pay the expenses of applying for a UK visa as well as flying to Edinburgh. It will also reimburse any additional expenses spent by the awardee prior to his or her arrival in Edinburgh.

Catto Combined MSc and PhD Scholarships | Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must identify as women, including cis and trans persons, as well as non-binary or gender fluid people who identify in a major manner as women or female, to be considered for this award. In most cases, they are supposed to be based in an African nation.
have a good undergraduate degree in the social sciences (minimum of a high 2.1) from an authorized African university (Those intending to pursue a PhD after completing a Masters degree with distinction will have an edge.)
not having received a degree from an institution outside of Africa in the past (with the exception of current or former students of the University of Edinburgh).
In addition, candidates must
exhibit a desire to pursue a PhD in African Studies.
show leadership potential (in a wide sense) and a desire to enhance the effect of their research
have applied for the MSc in Africa and International Development and/or the PhD in African Studies. By April 15, 2022, these applications must be submitted to the University of Edinburgh.
