Submit your proposal for the Africa Environment Reporting Program 2022, organized by African Women in the Media (AWiM).

AWiM is looking for proposals that highlight the gendered nature of African environmental concerns.

In-depth articles on environmental solutions with a focus on any of the 12 pillars of the African Green Stimulus Program are especially appealing to them. Journalists should also focus on the effect of the Covid-19 epidemic on ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation, waste management, and other themes relating to Africa’s wider environmental difficulties that affect women.

Pitches that concentrate on stories that haven’t gotten much attention are preferred. So keep an eye out for subjects that provide distinct gendered perspectives on environmental concerns.

Topics that have already been discussed extensively are less likely to be chosen.

AWiM will provide training to journalists who are commissioned to write articles.
The commission charge for each article is $100 USD.

Requirements for the AWiM Africa Environment Reporting Program

Applicants must be African-based female journalists. Applicants might come from any African nation. Only submissions written in English will be accepted for this reporting award opportunity.

Applicants must have a solid knowledge of English or be able to translate their work into English.

Women journalists working in any medium (e.g., internet, print, television, radio, etc.) and other media practitioners with a history of covering environmental beats are eligible for pitches. Pitches from freelance reporters and employees from all sorts of media organizations are welcomed, including international, national, local, and community-based media. If you work for a media company, include in your pitch if your company would want to co-publish your article.

The Storytelling Format

For the life of the initiative, they intend to offer 60 story awards in total. Ensure that women’s voices are effectively recorded when out on the field, and follow all safety precautions as needed; access to AWiM’s safety for journalist training may be supplied.

Each report must have high-resolution photos, be authenticated, fact-checked, and undergo the typical journalistic scrutiny.

If your piece is reprinted in your associated medium, it must include your byline and a statement that it was created as part of the AWiM/UNEP Africa environmental journalism program at the end.

How to Application

All pitches must be under 250 words in length. It should emphasize the main problem you want to concentrate on, why it’s important to the program, how under-reported it is, and what the gender perspective is. Also, explain why you’re the best person to report it and what kind of access you already have.
