African Union (AU) Media Fellowship 2022

Do you work as an African journalist, blogger, vlogger, content creator, or podcaster in Africa or in the diaspora? African Union Media Fellowship

The AU Media Fellowship seeks to accomplish the following goals:

  • To exploit creativity and innovation on the continent, train and enhance the capacity of journalists and/or content makers.
  • Build capacity in journalism and media around new and revolutionary technologies; and
  • Create a forum for journalists to connect and exchange best practices in the field of journalism’s future.
  • The Fellowship program will begin with a study visit and seminars to develop capability. The 20 fellows chosen will have direct access to key African Union officials and will have the chance to report on the AU’s progress on the Agenda 2063 strategic ambitions on the ground.

African Union Media Fellowship | Eligibility Criteria

  • Journalists, bloggers, vloggers, content producers, and podcasters from Africa and the diaspora are welcome to apply.
  • Fellows must have worked in creative media for at least three years, either as a journalist or in a related profession, and have a track record of measurable effect.
  • Working journalists having at least three years of full-time, professional media experience (or in a similar sector) are required to apply for the AU Media Fellowship. Professional experience does not include internships or journalism-related employment done as a university student.
  • Journalists that are affiliated or freelancing are eligible to apply. All candidates, however, must supply a letter of recommendation or support from a senior editor.
  • To effectively participate in and benefit from the Fellowship, applicants must be able to speak, read, and write fluent English.
  • The Fellows affirm their readiness to report on African Union events and topics, as well as their availability to be interviewed about the fellowship by foreign partners, as part of their application.
  • For the period of the fellowship, the Fellows indicate their readiness to participate in events and seminars.
  • Fellows must be able to come to Berlin in June 2022 and must fulfill all of the requirements for obtaining a Schengen Visa in their home country, including but not limited to:
  • Having a passport that is valid until at least December 2022
  • COVID-19 is fully vaccinated.
  • They will give you all of the documentation you will need to submit your visa application. You will be in charge of obtaining the visa.
  • The AU will pay and cover all travel expenses.

How to Apply for the African Union Media Fellowship

The following items should be included in your application:

  • Use a typical resume format (no picture, religion, or marital status).
  • A cover letter that explains your motivation, qualifications, and experience.
  • Include the following three parts in your proposal:

Story proposals: Include a brief summary of the stories you want to cover (approximately 200 words each) as well as who you aim to contact for interviews in your story suggestions.

Publication plan: Describe your publication strategy (language and target publication).

Social media: Explain briefly how you intend to participate with the African Union Commission using social media during your fellowship.

Work samples: Two work examples should be submitted. If you have work examples in other formats (e.g. video), please send us an email and we will try to meet your needs.
